In Maastricht, we invite prominent and inspiring speakers to share their ideas on Europe with a broad audience. Together with several partners we have organized a number of critical debates the last years, as part of ‘The Maastricht Debate Series’.
Spitzenkandidaten Debate 2019
The series kicked off with the ‘Spitzenkandidaten Debate’, prior to the European Elections in May 2019. The Vrijthof Theater was completely full, as well as the Vrijthof Square and the square outside Maastricht University Campus Brussels, where people could enjoy the live screening of the debate. The lead candidates of European parties Frans Timmermans, Bas Eickhout, Guy Verhofstadt, Jan Zahradil and Violeta Tomic debated with each other. Moderators Ryan Heath, POLITICO journalist, and Rianne Letschert Rector Magnificus of Maastricht University critically examined the points of view of the candidates.
EU agencies Debate
At the Maastricht Europe Days 2019, the Debate Series were followed up by two interesting debates: the ‘EU Agencies Debate’ and the debate ‘Challenges to the EU: the East-West divide’. On Friday, directors of several EU Agencies and other experts discussed the impact of EU Agencies on society and their role to bring Europe closer to its citizens.
Challenges to the EU: the East-West divide
The day after, Bernard Bot, former Minister of Foreign Affairs and András Kocsis, ambassador of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry critically discussed the historical context and current affairs between Eastern and Western Europe.
In December the Maastricht Debate Series will continue with an inspiring programme during the Maastricht Europe Days 2020 (more information will follow).
